Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden

Rockford, Illinois

Since late March I have been dropping by Klehm once or twice a week to watch the trees and wildflowers bloom. There's always something new. Click the photos for larger versions. And if you're in the Rockford area, be sure to stop by Klehm and do some exploring of your own.

Forgive my weak attempts at photography and, even more, my forays into wildflower identification. If I have it wrong, please let me know!

Pussytoes

alt Catsfoot
Antennaria...
April 28, 2010

Not sure which of the many species this is. To me, it most resembles Alpine (alt Rocky Mountain) Pussytoes (Antennaria alpina) or Little-leaf Pussytoes (Antennaria parvifolia).

A bit more mature than last week, but possibly still not fully in bloom. They really do look like a cat's toes.

A variety of Narcissus. Thanks to Betsy Rogers for the ID!

The colorful center feature is not dozens of stamens splayed out ala Busby Berkeley. It's a daffodil-like cup, mostly flattened.

In their habitat, behind some bluebells:

April 20, 2010

This may be a variety of pussytoes (Antennaria) or it may be something else. In either case I don't believe the blossoms are fully opened.
